Now that Christmas is passed, the new year is almost upon us! Some of you may be making New Year’s resolutions. Others of you may not be writing a formal list but be thinking about ways you can improve yourself in 2014. These often range from saving more money and taking weekly yoga classes to spending more time with family and pursuing that job promotion. But how many of your resolutions are focused on yourself?

Taking care of yourself physically is very important. But all those trips to the gym won’t matter much if your haircut is months old or your makeup is oily (read: not a Jane Iredale mineral kind). Here are some easy resolutions that will keep you looking beautiful and healthy throughout the new year.

Get a hair style makeover.

Unless you’ve had one of these in the last six months, it’s probably time again. Your hair is one of the first things people will notice when seeing you. It’s worth the time and money to ensure that you aren’t wearing an outdated or tired style.

The makeover doesn’t need to be drastic, either. It can be simply trimming a little extra off or trying a new hair color. If you want the full benefit of the makeover, try a completely different style. And, as we’ve talked about before on this blog, picking the right stylist will make all the difference. Choose one that’s creative, forward thinking, and a good listener. That will ensure that she listens to the style and type of haircut you want, and will have the creative chops to pull it off.

Invest in high quality makeup.

Sure, you might have that expensive palette of eye shadow that makes its appearance for every important event. But unless the rest of your makeup is also high quality, you aren’t doing your face any favors.

We like the Jane Iredale line of makeup. Most of the items are from organic ingredients; the ones that aren’t are mineral-based and natural. This means you aren’t putting harsh chemicals or heavy oils onto your skin. If you’re willing to spend a little more money in the beginning for excellent makeup (rather than the $10 special at the drugstore), your skin and eyelashes will quickly show the difference.

Learn a couple before-bed beauty tricks.

Again, these don’t have to be complicated or take a long time. The tricks range from braiding your hair in loose braids to slathering on lotion and wearing socks to lock in the moisture. Either of these – and more – can simplify your beauty regimen in the morning. Simply unbraid the hair for voluminous loose waves, and take off the socks for moisturized, soft feet.

Schedule regular manicure or pedicure appointments as “me” time.

Getting time to yourself is an important part of staying emotionally healthy and sane. We all need time to unplug, and what better way to do it than while caring for your nails? And since the stylist is there to pamper you and make you feel your best, there’s no effort or planning involved.

Stock up on lavender.

This scent has a long reputation of being calming and soothing on the nerves. Buy a bottle of it in the form of essential oil if you want the strongest version. The essential oil will also relieve the pain of hurt muscles of sore joints. You can easily create a calmer atmosphere in a room by setting this out or burning a lavender candle.

Incorporating this scent into your beauty care regimen should also be a priority in 2014. You can find it in shampoo, lotion, body wash, and more. You can also slip some dried lavender petals into a silk bag and place it in a drawer. This will instantly freshen the clothes or sheets there.

Take care of your lips well.

This doesn’t take much work, just a little thought. You can gently exfoliate your lips with your toothbrush after brushing your teeth, or with the corner of a wet washcloth. Just remember to rub in a circular motion and softly. The skin around your mouth is tender, and rubbing too hard may injure it.

Then follow up the exfoliation with plenty of lip balm. Jane Iredale Lip Drink or basic Vaseline will all do the trick. Make sure to moisturize your lips extra in the evening and whenever you’re at home, since your work space and daytime lipstick may be drying them out.
