At Athena, your Windsor salon and spa, we are really into green products, but we also want to make sure that you are well informed. This way, you can walk into any store and pick up products that will actually be good for your skin.

After all, you’re probably spending a lot of time making sure that your skin looks great without makeup, right? So, it only makes sense to use makeup that will benefit your skin instead of harm it. We get it! That’s why we’ve done the research, so that you can figure out whether to toss that “natural” foundation or keep it. Here’s what we uncovered.

Seriously Long Shelf Lives

Have you ever thought about how long your foundation actually lasts? A bottle of foundation can usually last up to one year (according to the manufacturer), and can really last for more than one year. (We know that you have some foundation that’s more than a year old!) How is it this stuff can last so long? It’s kind of the same thing as any packaged food product. Makeup lasts for a really long time because it is packed with preservatives and other chemically-created ingredients. We’re pretty sure that those things aren’t great for your skin!

The Natural Claim

So, what about all of those makeup brands that claim to consist of “natural” ingredients? Do all of those work? Are they all natural? What’s the scoop? The problem is that in the U.S., those ingredient claims are regulated in any way, so a company can call something the “natural organic super good for you healthy local makeup,” and it might just be like the other stuff. Except that they have a team hard at work to confuse the buyer.

The Good Stuff

Which ingredients should you avoid? To be honest, there’s a laundry list of ingredients that aren’t good for your skin at all. Since we can’t list them all here, though, we are going to list a few that are of top concern – the ones that we don’t want you to use because the staff at your Windsor salon cares about your skin health!

Look out for the following:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Coal tar
  • Parabens
  • Lead
  • Heavy metals

For the most part, a lot of “green” makeup products are actually pretty good for your skin. So why don’t more people buy those products, and why don’t you see truly green products on store shelves? It all has to do with competition, and it’s pretty hard to compete against major companies that also have “natural” and “green” lines. So, it may mean buying your makeup through your Windsor spa, or buying some stuff online.

The Real Deal

Just like food, makeup goes into your body (it’s absorbed by your skin). This means that (just like food), you have to make sure that you read makeup ingredients. Some of those things that companies put into makeup are really harmful, so skip those. But, we also don’t want you to become completely paranoid about what you can and can’t use, or what is and isn’t harmful to your skin – and some natural oils may irritate certain types of skin.

If you have any questions about makeup and what is and isn’t good for your skin, ask any one of the staff at your Fort Collins day spa – we’ll be happy to help you find the best products for your skin type. You can also find out more about our Fort Collins day spa by finding us on Facebook – we look forward to chatting with you!
