What is Cellulite and How to Get Rid of It

The benefits of brushing the body with a soft bristled brush are rumored to be great. But, does this tactic really work to get rid of cellulite? What about other tactics like massages in Fort Collins or something else? Let’s take a deeper look.

What Is Cellulite?

  • Rumor Number 1: cellulite only happens if you are really overweight.
  • Rumor Number 2: toxins cause cellulite
  • Rumor Number 3: cellulite only happens when you are out of shape
  • Rumor Number 4: cardio will get rid of cellulite

Now that those assumptions have been debunked, let’s explore the technical definition of cellulite (taken from Wikipedia): “persistent subcutaneous fat causing dimpling of the skin, especially on women’s hips and thighs.” Cellulite is subcutaneous fat – that’s all it is, and being out of shape, overweight, or toxins does not cause cellulite. Okay, so how is cellulite formed? And, more importantly, what can you do to get rid of it?

How Cellulite Forms

Here are the reasons why cellulite forms:

  • Genetics
  • Age (it gets worse with age)
  • Thin skin (part of genetics)
  • Hormone changes
  • Dehydration

There’s nothing you can do about genetics, age, and thin skin – you can’t even do much about hormones (most of the time). But, there’s good news! There are some things you can do to get rid of that pesky cellulite!

How to Get Rid of It

  1. Improved circulation: some people swear by the soft bristled brushes mentioned above. You can find these at most health food stores, and all you have to do is brush your legs every morning after your shower – circulation should improve.
  2. Get a tan: tans don’t get rid of cellulite, but all of that dimply skin won’t be as noticeable if your skin is on the darker side.
  3. Laser treatments: non-invasive medical treatments designed to improve the look of cellulite do work.
  4. Massage: massage can work temporarily – if you have a big event coming up, book a massage with us! Massages in Fort Collins never felt better!
  5. Drinking water: it’s possible that you’re simply dehydrated. Try drinking a lot of water every day for two weeks, and see if the appearance of your skin changes. Most of the time, you’ll notice smoother skin.
  6. Yoga: some people swear by the circulation-improving exercise that is yoga. You have nothing to loose – book a class and try it out!
  7. Weight training: again, many people believe that training your legs with heavy weights will help to diminish the look of cellulite. If you aren’t currently exercising with weights, book an appointment with a personal trainer to see what you can do.
