What Color Mascara Should You Wear?

Mascara - Athena Spa and Salon

At our Windsor salon, we are often asked about makeup tricks and tips. Out of all the tips that we are asked to provide to our clients, the most popular question we are asked is, “what color mascara should I really be wearing?” Some beauty editors will tell you that brown looks younger while others will tell you to match the color of your eyes to the right shade. Really, there are a number of different opinions out there, but at our Windsor salon we go by the following rules.

The Black Wand: black mascara does look good on everyone, and even blondes can pull off the black look. Since the point of mascara is to outline your eyes, few colors do a better job of this than black. That said, there are some reasons why you may not want to wear black all the time.

Sometimes Brown: brown mascara (dark brown) can be a really fun daytime look, and brown does look great on green and blue eyes. You may also want to move towards brown if you find that your usual black is making you look older than you are. Sometimes, black mascara can make eyes look smaller, and small eyes can also look older.

Playing With Colors: if you’re tempted to try another color like purple, blue, or green, don’t add it all to both sets of lashes. Coat your upper lashes with your usual black or brown, and finish with one quick coat of color on the lower set. You’ll see whether or not those colors make your eyes pop in a good way. Putting color on both lashes isn’t the right way to do it, though!

Your Options

Aside from mascara, there are other ways to make sure that your lashes stand out. At your Windsor salon, we offer the following options:

  • Eyelash tinting: say goodbye to your mascara with a quick eyelash tint! At a professional salon, the right color for your eyes can be determined, and you will have lovely eyes in no time when you tint – plus, there’s no need for mascara for a number of weeks.
  • Eyelash extensions: extensions don’t last as long as tinting does, but when you get professional eyelash extensions, you will note a clear difference right away. Once again, you can ditch the mascara after you have gone the extension route.
  • Eyelash perm: a perm for your hair might not be the best thing going, but perming your eyelashes means that you don’t have to worry about curling them for a few weeks.

What do beauty salons like Athena recommend? All of our clients are unique, and all of the eyelashes we see daily are unique too. Most beauty salons, including Athena, have professional makeup artists on staff that can tell you what color mascara to use, and whether or not you might benefit from tinting or extensions or a perm or anything else. Since eyelashes define our eyes (and tend to get shorter and stubbier with age!), it’s important to pay attention to this feature in order to look young, fresh, and ready for anything that comes your way.
