How to Prep for a Spray Tan

Earlier this week, we mentioned that when protecting your skin from UV, you can either embrace your pale skin, or opt for a spray tan to keep up your tanned appearance and avoid revamping your wardrobe and makeup styles.

At Athena Salon and Spa, we provide our professional spray tans as one of our spa services, so that our clients can have a natural-looking tan without spots, blotches, or streaks. Our spray tan services are done completely by hand, to ensure evenness and maximum control.

Before you allow us to take care of your tan, there are a couple things you can do to make sure you are perfectly prepped for the best possible results.

Before the day of your spray tan:

If you are using Retin-A or taking Accutane, ask your doctor if you can go off of it for one week before your appointment, because these medications can affect how the tan is absorbed into your skin and cause even the best salon tan to look splotchy.

Exfoliate your skin using a nonoily scrub. You will want to pay extra attention to your knees and elbows, which usually absorb more of the tanner, as well as the thinner parts of your skin such as your neck, chest, shins, and face.

Moisturize immediately after exfoliating.

Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your spray tan. If you are concerned about your nails, cover them with Vaseline or a clear nail polish.

The morning of your spray tan:

Shower to remove the moisturizer from the night before. Do not put any products on your skin before your spray tan – this includes makeup, deodorant, perfume, and moisturizer. Be sure to take alternative measures to protect from the sun since you cannot wear SPF!

If you have scabs or recent scars, coat them with Vaseline.

Think ahead to the clothes you would like to wear during the tan, if any. Don’t plan to wear anything that you wouldn’t want to get stained, just in case the tanner doesn’t come out.

After your spray tan:

Do a quick look to make sure your technician didn’t miss any splotches, just in case!

Once your skin is dry, wear loose, dark clothing. If you can go without, consider ditching the bra for the next six hours so it doesn’t rub your skin.

Don’t let your skin get wet for the next 8 hours, and try not to do anything that will make you sweat.

Don’t exfoliate for the next week, if you can avoid it, and shave as infrequently as possible.

Moisturize all of your skin after you shower.

Athena Salon and Spa provides excellent spray tans as one of our high-class spa services. We are happy to answer any questions you have over the phone while you book your appointment, or on the day of your tan!
