How To Repair Damaged Hair

Damaged hair happens. Most of the time, hair becomes damaged due to overstyling, extreme temperatures, harsh chemicals, and too much shampooing. Hair can also become very damanged if you aren’t taking care of your body on the inside by not eating the right foods, hydrating, and trying to stay in the best possible health. Once pieces of hair have broken, are frayed, or become too dry, it’s a tough road back to that healthy hair place. But, don’t worry. We have a ton of excellent tips that will help you repair your damaged hair.

The Vitamin Question

Marketers have a field day with hair loss and hair damage. Companies are always coming up with miracle cures in the form of vitamins and pills of all kinds to treat hair loss and repair damaged hair. Do any of these vitamins work? The answer is both ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ If you are lacking vitamins in a serious way (which isn’t usually the case), you may see some hair growth by taking the right supplement.

That said, you don’t need to take a specific ‘hair growth’ supplement in order to get your daily dose of the right vitamins. All you really need is a good multi-vitamin that contains the basic vitamin list. If you aren’t taking a multi-vitamin right now, head to the store and pick one up. Or, book an appointment with your doctor for a blood test to see if you are deprived of any vitamins. Nutrition plays an important part in hair growth and loss too.

You Are What You Eat

Hair consists mostly of a protein called Keratin. While not proven, eating a diet that is rich in protein tends to make some sense. However, you can’t eat only protein and expect hair growth. The best way to make sure that the mane on your head stays thick and shiny is to eat a well-balanced diet full of all those essential vitamins and nutrients. Again, it’s not proven that any one nutrient will help hair grow, but eating a diet that is lacking in any major way is not good for your overall health, which, in turn, impacts the way that your hair looks. See how that works? The other important thing to remember is not to torture your hair daily.

Care for Your Hair

Women have a lot of pressure to look great all the time. If you wake up daily to dry, straighten, or curl your hair (even on weekends), it’s time to back off of that regimine. The more tools you use, the more you will damage your hair. Think back to a time when you didn’t use a bunch of styling tools on a daily basis. Was your hair better back then? Chances are that you had great hair in your younger years, but all of that went out the window with styling options.

If you aren’t going anywhere important (and, no, the grocery store doesn’t count!), one or two days per week, let your hair dry naturally, don’t use any styling products, and simply give your hair a break. If you are worried about appearances, you can wrap your hair up (loosely) in a scarf or push it back with a soft headband (don’t use tight elastic bands). You can also resort to a cute hat that will cover your hair sufficiently, look great, and give your hair that needed break. Lastly, take the time to deeply condition your hair once per week.
