Everything You Want to Know About Spray Tanning

Summertime might be here, but waiting for that perfect tan might not be an option if you have an event to attend (or you just want to look amazing for an upcoming date!). Spray tanning is a form of sunless tanning that tends to look better than any other kind of sunless tanning when done right.

We do a lot of spray tans at our Windsor salon! Here’s everything you wanted to know about getting a spray tan, and how to make sure that your new tan stays and looks great.

The Pros of the Spray Tan

Here are some of the reasons why spray tanning is superior to any other kind of sunless tanning application:

  • It’s safe
  • It won’t cause your skin to wrinkle (like damage from the sun or tanning beds can)
  • It’s quick and painless
  • Skin looks naturally tan (not orange)

There are a variety of ways to apply a spray tan, Windsor folks! These ways include entering a tanning booth that’s equipped with spray nozzles (automatic spray); at-home spray tan bottles; application done by an experienced spray tan technician. We recommend letting a technician spray you, since this is a lot simpler (and will work a lot better) than trying to spray yourself at home or stepping into an automatic spray booth (you could miss a few spots). Are there any cons to spray tanning? The biggest drawbacks are that you can’t wear any tight clothing for six hours (ladies, it’s best to remove your bras during this time); and the cost of a spray tan can be expensive if you require multiple applications. However, spray tanning is the best way to get that bronzed look without sitting in the sun for hours.

Preparing for Your Spray Tan

In order to make the best of your new tan application, here’s what we recommend you do prior to your appointment.

  1. Exfoliate: before you arrive at the salon, exfoliate your whole body to remove any dead skin. This will help the spray tan liquid to adhere to your skin better and last longer.
  2. Wear a thong or suit that you don’t mind ruining. Spray tanner tends to wash out of clothes after a few washes, but you don’t want to take the chance of ruining your best underwear.
  3. Do a thorough check: take a good look at your body before you step out of the booth, just to make sure that no spots were missed.
  4. Don’t shower: do not get your skin wet for at least eight hours.
  5. Remember to moisturize: if you want your tan to last longer, moisturize every time you step out of the shower for a week or two following your tan. It’s also a good idea to avoid shaving as much as possible during that time.
  6. Relax! Spray tan technicians have seen all kinds of bodies, shapes, sizes, and people. There’s no need to feel nervous in front of a professional if you go to a salon with a good reputation.

Athena’s Spray Tan Options

At Athena, we use South Seas for all of our spray tan applications – this is the same spray tan provider for celebrities that take part in the show ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ We also offer a complete line of South Seas take home products for you to check out. We offer natural tans, traditional tans, and the option to add a shimmer glow to any tan. If you don’t like to exfoliate at home, we also have an exfoliating service that can be done post-tan, so that your tan lasts longer. Our rates are affordable too – ranging from $33 to $100 depending on the type of package you want to purchase. The most important thing to do when considering a spray tan, Windsor readers and other Fort Collins readers, is to look for a salon that has a lot of experience with this type of tanning procedure. At our Windsor salon, we promise nothing but the best in spray tans and any other service that we offer. Come in to book your tan today or give us a call. If you have an important event to attend, there’s no better way to look naturally tan than to get a quick spray tan!
